The Jahangirnagar University Department of Economics supports a pluralist approach to economics that embraces mainstream and heterodox perspectives and emphasizes policy applications. We believe that theoretical understanding, empirical investigation, and policy analysis are enriched by study of the evolution of economic ideas and economic institutions.
Established as one of the first four departments of Jahangirnagar University in 1971, the Department of Economics is widely considered as one of the top economics departments in Bangladesh. The department is home to 26 full-time faculty members including Ph.D. faculty members who contribute to building well-reputed undergraduate and graduate programs in the country.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning was established in 1999 under the Faculty of Social Science with a four year long Bachelor in Urban and Regional Planning (BURP) program. The first batch had a class size of 20. The department of URP now offers BURP, MURP, MPhil and PhD program. Currently, the department has more than 200 regular students with 20 faculties and 7 support staffs.

The department has established in 1985. This department has been offering four-years undergraduate programme, one year Masters programme and M.Phil., Ph.D. programme. Now the total number of students in undergraduate is 253 and in Masters is 77. Furthermore, 17 M.Phil researchers and 23 Ph.D. researchers are currently enrolled in the department. 18 batch so has been finished the Masters programme and the total number of students passed is 1011. The numbers of faculties are twenty four. Among them 11 are professors, 6 are associate professors, 3 are assistant professors and 4 are lecturers. The Department of Geography and Environment, one of the oldest and largest departments of Jahangirnagar University, offers superb teaching, first-class laboratory facilities and excellent employment prospects. Teaching and research in this department cover a broad spectrum - from arsenic issues to air quality monitoring, environmental health, spatial analysis, environmental hazard and risk analysis, climate change, urban and regional planning, fluvial geomorphology, and floodplain management. The department is equipped with GPS techniques, GIS and Remote Sensing facilities and physical laboratories. In addition, the department collects daily weather information from its own weather station located in the University Campus.

Initially in 1972, the courses in Politics were offered at minor level for the subsidiary students of Economics, Geography, History, Bangla, and English. The Department of Government and Politics formally came into being in 1976 with only two faculties. Now it has turned into 21 faculty members in number. The department offers undergraduate, Masters, M.Phil and Ph.D. programs. Each year about 65-70 students register in the honors and almost same number in the masters levels. The enrolment of students in the M. Phil and Ph.D. programs ranges within 25-35. The medium of instruction is both Bangla and English. The academic year is July to June. The Department of Public Administration at Jahangirnagar University, since its establishment in 2006-2007 session, is committed to produce state-of-the-art skills for the government and create indigenous knowledge based solutions to a host of administrative and policy problems and challenges. The department envisions to become a regional center of excellence in the policy, governance and administrative science. The department currently has a 4-year undergraduate program (BSS in Public Administration) and a 1-year Master program (Master in Public Administration).
